Aftercare
First Bandage on Tattoo:
Leave the second skin bandage on for 8–24 hours or 3-5 days, depending on the type of tattoo and as directed by your artist.
It is normal for fluid (plasma, ink, and blood) to collect under the bandage, this helps the healing process.
When to Remove the Bandage Early:
Remove the bandage immediately if it leaks, the seal breaks, or the tattoo is exposed to air. If the fluid buildup is excessive, or the bandage begins to peel off, or becomes compromised (holes/tears), bacteria is able to get underneath and so you must remove the bandage sooner. If you are experiencing a reaction to the second skin, remove it.
Rules to Follow After a Tattoo:
You may shower normally, but avoid submerging the tattoo in water. No baths, hot tubs, pools, or swimming, minimum 2-4 weeks or after scabbing and peeling have ceased. Submerging can introduce bacteria causing infection and cause the ink to fade, blur, or scab prematurely. This may affect the final outcome of your tattoo.
Do not pick or scratch the tattoo or the bandage, do not puncture the bandage.
Avoid excessive sweating or activities that may loosen the adhesive or add to fluid buildup under the bandage. If excessive fluid builds up under the bandage, you will have to remove it early.
Do not expose the tattoo to direct sunlight when healing. Use sunscreen after it’s healed! Your tattoo will change as you age because your skin is always changing. Using sunscreen will help it age better.
Sleep in clean sheets, avoid clothing that will rub on the tattoo while it’s healing, don’t use tanning beds, don’t use bar soap, don’t use sticky or scented lotions, keep pet licks and scratches away from healing tattoo.
Your healing tattoo will likely get itchy. This is normal in the healing process. Do not itch or scratch the tattoo. You may lightly pat your tattoo for relief.
Mild redness, itching, and peeling are normal.
Some tattoos may take up to three months to fully heal.
